Mackinnon Pass

Before any walker sets off on the Milford Track for the first time there is always one question - 'What is the Mackinnon Pass really like?'

After an early departure from Pompolona Lodge you'll encounter Practice Hill - (aptly named!), before a brief stop to catch your breath at Mintaro Hut. Once you leave Mintaro you'll get your first glimpse through the trees of the saddle you are about to climb over - Mt Hart rises to your left, Mt Balloon rises to your right. The lower point in between is Mackinnon Pass.

The pass is a series of 11 zig zags up an uneven and often rocky track. The gradient averages 1:10 over a 3.2km (2mi) track. You'll be under the canopy of the beach trees beteween zig zag 1 and 6, after which you'll emerge into the alpine herb field.

You'll know you're almost there when you can see the monument. Here your guide will be waiting with a hot cuppa and a 'congratulations!'. - But you're not quite there! Wander over to see the view from 12 Second Drop, then it's another slight incline to the top. Ascending Mackinnon Pass can take between 45 minutes and 2 hours. But it's not a race, so make sure you stop often to take in the impressive views! Your guides will be there to assist you as much or as little as you require.

Once you finally reach the top all the effort will have been worthwhile. The view will take your breath away as you look back down the valley that you have walked the past 2 days. Pompolona Lodge (your bed last night), is visible amongst the trees, 700m below.

After lunch at Pass Hut it's time to tackle the descent, which is steeper than the ascent. You will descend 900m over a distance of 5.6km (3 1/2mi) via another rocky and uneven track.

Whilst the Mackinnon Pass may seem a little daunting to some, it is best to take it one zig zag at a time and rely on your guides for assistance as much as you need. The view from the top is worth every step. As is the feeling of elation when you reach Quintin Lodge later that day and can reflect on the pass you have just conquered.
