Help us make a real difference

Part of the revenue from each guided walk goes to the Department of Conservation to maintain the tracks and the surrounding environment.

Please do not leave any belongings or rubbish out on the track. Recycling and waste bins are provided at the lodges. If you see any rubbish on the track, please take it with you.

Many areas on the track are fragile and take a long time to re-generate. Please do not deviate from the established path.

Fire is a huge threat to our environment so please take care with fires, cigarettes, and matches.

Please treat areas of spiritual or historical significance with respect.

Be considerate of other people

We encourage you to listen to the guides, who will tell you about the historical, physical and natural importance of the World Heritage Area and don't hesitate to ask questions.

Keep an eye out for birds and wildlife on the track and tell the guides if you see any rare varieties (such as the Blue Duck or Kiwi).

In the lodges, please switch off lights when you do not require them.

Please  use the 'half-flush' option in the toilets where possible, this can reduce water usage by up to 67%.

Please consider your water consumption; energy is required to heat and pump water along pipes

On the track, to avoid stream and lake contamination, please use toilets provided. If this is not possible, please consult your guide, choose a location at least 50m from the tracks and bury all toilet waste at least 150mm under the soil's organic layer.

Please leave only footprints, and  take only photographs and memories within the World Heritage Area.

And above all, savour the rare atmosphere, this World Heritage Area is a special place and one that we are privileged to experience.
