The Making of Mackenzie, Routeburn Track

Between February 2007and March 2008, a total of 92 men and women worked under Arrow International Ltd on the construction of Lake Mackenzie Lodge on the Routeburn Track for Ultimate Hikes. The project meant working through days of rain and constant snowfalls whilst transporting more than 200 tonnes of materials into the site and approximately 30 tonnes of rubbish out, all by helicopter.

Work began with relocating and upgrading the Department of Conservation campsite. The new amenities for campers were moved a distance of 300 metres to accommodate the new lodge buildings.

Operations ceased for three months over the winter, when the area was mostly inaccessible due to the weather conditions. Work re-commenced as soon as the snow thawed and from then on it was a race against time to have the new facility finished and open well in advance of the 2008/2009 summer walking season.

A lot of thought was put into the décor and exposed aged Macrocarpa beams and stone fireplaces add to the restful ambience of the lodge. The face of the lodge is predominantly glass allowing walkers to take in phenomenal views of the Darren Mountains. It’s just a short walk to the edge of the tranquil Lake Mackenzie, where the feeling of being in a truly special setting is unquestionable.

The spectacular Lake Mackenzie Lodge was completed on 17 March 2008, the very next day opening its doors for the first guided walkers to rest their weary legs and experience the luxurious comfort of the lodge, whilst relaxing in the stunning surrounds of the renowned Routeburn Track. Lake Mackenzie Lodge is exclusive to Ultimate Hikes guided walkers.
