Responsible Tourism

The special area in which the Milford, Routeburn and Greenstone tracks are situated, Te Wahipounamu, has been recognised globally by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area. The stunning glacier-shaped fjords, towering cliffs, sweeping valleys, mountain peaks, rocky coasts, lakes and breathtaking waterfalls justify this designation. Not only is the physical landscape a sight to behold, the park is covered with Southern Beech and podocarps, some of which are over 800 years old. An abundance of alpine flowers grace the higher regions, including the beautiful Mt Cook Lily. The park is also home to many of New Zealand's endangered native birds; including the only mountain parrot; the Kea, the Brown Kiwi, Blue Duck and in certain areas, the extremely rare flightless Takahe.

We recognise that operating in this spectacular part of the world is a privilege and are committed to minimising our impact on the environment in many ways. We take great pride in providing walkers from all over the world with a unique insight into the magic of New Zealand's wilderness and will continue to upgrade and maintain the tracks whilst ensuring their sustainability for the future.
