If you’re looking for a true alpine adventure in Queenstown, the Ben Lomond Track delivers. This is a challenging full-day hike that rewards you with panoramic views across Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, and even as far as Mount Aspiring National Park on a clear day. It’s the most popular summit climb in Queenstown, and a must-do for those with the time and fitness to tackle it.
The walk at a glance
- Distance: 11 km return (to the summit)
- Duration: 6–8 hours
- Difficulty: Hard – steady climb and alpine terrain
Highlights
The track begins in native beech and Douglas fir forest before climbing through tussock grasslands and into open alpine country. Once above the treeline, the views only get better with every step. From the summit you’re rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree panorama of lakes, mountains, and valleys, one of the most iconic views in New Zealand.
Getting there
You can start the track from several points in central Queenstown. The most common access is from the Skyline Gondola base up the Tiki Trail, or you can take the gondola up to save 450 metres of climbing. Both options are only a short walk from the town centre.
Need to know
The track starts from the Skyline Gondola base or top station (taking the gondola shortens the walk). Weather can change quickly at altitude, so carry layers, food, and water. In winter and spring, snow and ice may cover the track, be sure to check conditions before heading up
Why walk it
This is Queenstown’s classic summit hike. It’s demanding but achievable for fit walkers and one of the most rewarding day walks in New Zealand with some of the best views in the region.
