The tracks are of differing lengths but are usually multi day. They are designed to be easily accessible to trampers and hikers, and have huts maintained by the Department of Conservation. The huts provide shelter and toilets, with communal areas to sleep and eat. All equipment, bedding, and food must be carried in by the hikers.
Due to the popularity of some of the tracks like the Milford and Routeburn tracks, a booking system operates through the department of Conservation to book hut spaces.
The Great Walks season generally runs from October to April. It is not advisable to walk during the winter months as many of the tracks are remote and covered in snow and ice.
