Lake Hayes

Known as the “mirror lake,” Lake Hayes is famous for its still waters that reflect the surrounding mountains and sky. The walkway around the lake is a peaceful 8 km loop that locals love for running, cycling, or simply enjoying a gentle stroll.

On calm days, The Remarkables are perfectly mirrored in the lake’s surface, one of the most photographed scenes near Queenstown. Along the way, you’ll pass wetlands and open farmland, with plenty of birdlife to spot. Seasonal changes bring new charm, from golden autumn colours to fresh green growth in spring.

Getting there

Lake Hayes is located about 15 minutes’ drive from Queenstown, just off State Highway 6 between Queenstown and Arrowtown. The main carpark is on the Arrowtown side, with other access points around the lake.

Need to know

The track is well-formed and suitable for all ages, though parts can be muddy after rain.

Why walk it

Lake Hayes is a relaxed, scenic outing with incredible reflections and birdlife. It’s ideal if you want a quieter alternative to Queenstown’s busier tracks.
