Roy’s Peak Track Wanaka

Roy’s Peak is one of New Zealand’s most iconic day hikes, famous for its breathtaking views over Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps. The track is challenging but incredibly rewarding, with scenery that makes it a bucket-list experience for many hikers.

Highlights

The trail zigzags steadily uphill through farmland and tussock slopes before reaching the famous viewpoint overlooking Lake Wanaka, Mount Aspiring, and surrounding peaks. On a clear day, the views are unmatched.

Getting there

The track begins a 10-minute drive from central Wanaka on the Mt Aspiring Road. A small carpark is available, but it fills quickly in summer, aim for an early start.

Need to know

The track is exposed with little shade, so bring plenty of water, sun protection, and warm layers for the summit. It’s closed each year for lambing from October 1 to November 10.
