Sealy Tarns Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park

Known as the “stairway to the stars,” the Sealy Tarns Track is a steep but rewarding climb with views across Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park.

Highlights

The track zigzags up a series of steps and rocky sections, gaining 600m in elevation. At Sealy Tarns, you’ll find reflective alpine pools with jaw-dropping views of Mt Cook, the Hooker Valley, and the surrounding peaks.

Getting there

The track starts at White Horse Hill Campground, just a 5-minute drive from Mt Cook Village. Parking is available at the trailhead.

Need to know

This is a steep track, best suited for fit walkers. Carry water, snacks, and layers as weather can change rapidly in the alpine environment. For those with more energy, the track continues on to Mueller Hut for an overnight adventure.

Stay in Mt Cook Village for easy access to the track. Options range from budget lodges to the iconic Hermitage Hotel with mountain-view rooms.

Why walk it

Though short, the Sealy Tarns Track is a tough climb with huge rewards. The views from the tarns make it one of the most memorable hikes in the national park.
