Both guided and unguided walks offer the chance to experience New Zealand's spectacular Great Walks, but the experience is quite different.
With a guided walk, the planning, logistics, accommodation, meals, and day-to-day details are all taken care of before you even arrive. Instead of organising transport, carrying cooking equipment, preparing meals, or navigating bookings, you can focus on what you came for: enjoying the track and the incredible landscapes around you.
Everything is taken care of
One of the biggest differences with a guided walk is how easy the experience feels from start to finish.
At Ultimate Hikes, transport, accommodation, meals, and luggage transfers are all organised for you, so there’s less time spent worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the experience itself. You can simply arrive ready to walk, knowing the details have already been taken care of.
Comfortable lodges at the end of each day
After a day on the track, returning to a warm and comfortable lodge can make all the difference.
Along the Milford and Routeburn Tracks, guests stay in private lodges with hot showers, drying rooms, and comfortable beds. Freshly prepared meals are included each day, meaning there’s no need to carry cooking equipment or prepare your own food after hours of walking.
It allows you to fully enjoy the adventure while still having the comfort and convenience to properly relax each evening.
Walk at your own pace
One of the most common misconceptions about guided walks is that you have to stay with the group at all times.
In reality, guests are free to walk at their own pace throughout the day. Some people enjoy walking and chatting with others, while some prefer to take things slower, stop for photos, or simply enjoy the quietness of the track.
Our guides are there to provide support, local knowledge, and assistance when needed, but there’s still plenty of independence and flexibility throughout the experience.
Support and local knowledge along the way
Having experienced guides on the track adds another layer to the experience.
Along the way, guides share stories about the history of the area, native wildlife, conservation projects, and the landscapes you’re walking through. They’re also there to offer encouragement, answer questions, and provide assistance if needed.
For many guests, this helps create a deeper connection to the places they’re visiting.
A chance to properly switch off
For many people, walking the Milford or Routeburn Track becomes a rare opportunity to disconnect from everyday life.
With limited phone reception, no constant notifications, and days spent immersed in nature, guests often find themselves slowing down naturally. The focus shifts to simple things: walking through alpine scenery, listening to birdsong, sharing conversations over dinner, and enjoying being present in the moment.
It offers the feeling of a genuine digital detox, without giving up comfort at the end of the day.
The best of both worlds
A guided walk combines the adventure and achievement of completing one of New Zealand’s most iconic tracks with the comfort, support, and freedom to fully enjoy the journey.
For many guests, it’s the balance that makes the experience so memorable: spectacular landscapes during the day, comfortable lodges at night, and the ability to switch off while knowing everything else has been taken care of.
To enjoy your walk you must be able to carry a medium sized backpack (40 ltrs, weighing 7-10kgs) for 6 to 9 hours over 10-21km of mountain track each day.
The Milford and Routeburn Tracks are a mixture of forest tracks and alpine trails. As a hike they are neither easy nor difficult to traverse but they can be challenging in places. Our guides help you navigate every part safely and confidently.
