What are the lodges like?

Staying in our private lodges

After each day on the track, you’ll stay in our private lodges. These are designed to give you a comfortable place to rest, recharge, and dry out before the next day’s adventure. All lodges are fully serviced, with hot showers, flushing toilets, clean linen, towels, and basic toiletries provided.

Ultimate Hikes owns and maintains 5 lodges along the Milford and Routeburn Tracks. They are fully staffed and supplied, in these remote areas, all essentials are flown in by helicopter and rubbish flown out. Supply days occur once a week.

On the Greenstone Tracks (Steele Creek Lodge & McKellar Lodge), the experience is more rustic. Accommodation is in dormitory and bunk-style shared rooms.

Private Rooms

On the Milford and Routeburn Tracks, private rooms have either a queen or two single beds and an ensuite bathroom. Linen and towels are supplied, and toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided.

Shared Rooms

• Routeburn: Four single beds per room, with shared bathrooms.
• Milford: Bunk-style rooms with 4–6 beds and shared bathrooms.

All shared rooms have linen, duvets, pillows, towels and basic toiletries. A sleepsheet is provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Greenstone Lodges

On the Greenstone section of the Grand Traverse, Steele Creek Lodge has bunk-style dormitories, and McKellar Lodge has four-bed rooms. There are no private rooms on this part of the track. A sleepsheet is provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Mitre Peak Lodge

The final night on the Milford Track is spent at Mitre Peak Lodge at Milford Sound. Rooms here have queen or twin beds, ensuite bathrooms with baths, and spectacular views of Mitre Peak and the Sound

Lounges and dining

Each lodge features a warm, friendly lounge with games, reading materials, tea and coffee available throughout the day. Guides hold daily briefings here in the evening.

All meals are included:

• Breakfast: continental followed by cooked options.
• Lunch: you’ll find ingredients each morning to make your own lunch; there are snacks and fruit also.
• Dinner: a three-course meal in the dining room, with at least one vegetarian option.

Lodge Facilities

Each lodge has sinks and ringers to wash your hiking gear. Large drying rooms take heat from the generators to provide a quick drying facility so your washing will be dried ready for the next day's hiking.

Shared bathrooms have shower and toilet cubicles, towels are provided and hairdryers are available.  Ensuite bathrooms attached to private rooms have showers and toilet, hairdryer and towels.

Ultimate Hikes lodges provide comfort, care, and rest in remote settings. Private or shared rooms, full meals, warm lounges, drying facilities, all designed so you can relax fully, knowing everything is taken care of.
